A picnic can be defined as an excursion  for joy and

recreation .In this hurly-burly world of tumult and

turmoil , people become dull in soul and drab  in spirit. Round

the clock they are engrossed  in materialistic pursuits.

They feed their big bellies but do nothing for their

vexed souls. They have confined  themselves to the

small stinging nooks of the houses or the offices. They toil to dusk to make loads of money. Life has

become flat, boring and monotonous for them. They

spare no time to enjoy a fresh nutritious breath . They have

no time to spend in the company of halmy nature. Wordsworth

says:

"The world is too much with us; late and soon,

Getting and spending, we lay waste our powers

Little we see in Nature that is ours;"

They do not bother to enlighten  their souls an

illumine their brains. They have become almos

unresponsive , insensitive and apathetic  about beauty, grace and glamour.

They have lost their taste fora estheticism. They find nature to be dull in soul and drab in colour. In sucha grim situation, an excursion proves to be an amazing antidote to counter the venomous

effects of tedium and ennui.

I, like men of today, live a busy hectic life but I do spares one time for the enlightenment of my soul. I love to enjoy Leisure to end the disquiet of dull routine. Here follows howI enjoyed my last picnic. A few days ago, my friends and I chalked out a programme to spend the forthcoming Sunday on the bank of the Indus. The idea to

enjoy ripe pulpy mangoes on a cool shady bank of

the river fascinated us so much that we finalized the program in a trice. The anxiously. awaited Sunday brought feverish activity with it. As we were to proceed early,

everyone was enthusiastically eager to be in time. All the

preparations were made within no time and we all started off on our

bikes. The sky was overcast with silvery clouds. Cool breeze was

fanning our faces. We were no less happy than Wordsworth when he

entered the enchanted valley of Race down. I started singing his

beautiful verses:

Oh there is blessing in this gentle breeze

That blows from the green fields and from the clouds

And from the sky: it beats against my cheek,

And seems half-conscious of the joy it gives."

It was a pleasant short ride. All were extremely excited and delighted. In half an hour we reached our destination.

We placed our things and eatables in the shade of a large leafty

tree. Straightaway we put on the life jackets and got ready to

plunge into the river. We nosedived one after the other

into the dark depth of the river. It was a pure joy to swim in the cool water of the river.

Light drizzle from silvery clouds, prismatically

colours of rainbow in the blue lake of heaven, soft balmy

gliding boats, floating birds, soft soothing stream of water, Sittile ripples tondling  the river bank, rows of

flagrant flowers on the bank exerted a delightful impact

on our weary  souls. The whole panorama created sweet

sensations in my blood and along my heart. I agreed with

Keats:

"A thing of beauty is a joy for ever".

We spent a pretty long time in the river and felt a little bit

exhausted  We came out of the river and pounced  upon

the  mangoes lying in a tub of cold water. We sucked in

the sugary pulp of ripe mangoes. Then we reposed and

relaxed fora while. Some of us took a short nap even. One of us

began playing flute. A friend of mine began to sing a sweet song. A few

of us began dancing and clapping. Some of us began playing cards and

chess. One of us made many funny jokes to amuse us.

After sometime we gathered strength and descended into

water again to have another dip. We started the competition of diving,

swimming and rowing . R was a marvellous  adventures .Finally our cook announced from the bank that the dinner was

ready. We rushed out of the water to enjoy a delicious dinner. We ate our eatables  that we furned on the music player and started singing and

dancing. Everyone sang his favourite song. Finally we felt a little bit sleepy. As we were pretty exhausted, some of us drifted off to sleep. Suddenly there was a grest crash of thunder. All got alarmed.

Lightning was flashing in the sky. We wrapped our luggage quickly

and got ready to return. Soon t began to rain cats and dogs the thick sheet of heavy rain obscured the whole view. We rode

home in the pouring rain of summer. This was really a wonderful day to

be cherished in our memory and recounted with pride.

"Though nothing can bring back the hour of splendour in the grass, of glory in the flower".

(Wordsworth) (887 words)
